It was my birthday SHOUT HURRAY!

IMG_2645May 16th once again came around. And I'm official one year older and wiser too. I had a lovely day. I slept in until 8 am (Yes, sadly, that is sleeping in for me.) I hung around in my pajamas until noon. I went to my family's ward BBQ. Did a little shopping

And I went rock climbing with Abby, Steve and Caleb. This was my one request for the day.

IMG_2638We took Caleb for his first rock climbing trip. He did an awesome job climbing up. I was impressed. Unfortunately, once he was almost to the top I realized we forgot to teach him how to come down. Oops!! We coached him and he caught on part way down.

IMG_2651Dinah decided to give a try and she climbed all the way up. Getting her down took a lot of encouraging and coaxing. You wouldn't think it but it can be unnerving to come down because you have to lean back and completely trust the IMG_2654person belaying you.

The rest of the family came up to roast hot dogs and marshmallows. It was a fantastic evening.

IMG_2644I am actually feeling pretty good about being another year older. Each year that goes by the more I do and experience. I am excited for this coming year and what more there is to come. Anything can happen.

No matter how old you are, there's always something good to look forward to.

So many places to see

It’s kinda funny that people all over the world come to Utah to visit the many awesome sites. And I, who have lived here most of my life, have not been to many of them. Partly because I am too IMG_2636busy going to other places around the world. So I’ve set an unofficial goal to see all of these sites here in Utah by the time I am 30. And to visit most of the sites in the US by the time I am 50. (“Unofficial goal” because I am going to have to do some research and get a list and plan going to see what this goal is going to involve.) I’m giving myself 20+ years to visit the US sites because there are about 391 of Natl Parks alone(I cha cha-ed it), that’s not counting National Historical Landmarks (2,473) and amusement parks (over 200). I will also be busy visiting more places out of the US. Let’s just say I’ll be bust for the next 20 something years. I might have to extend the dead line to 70.
Anyway, what initiated this “unofficial goal” is I went to Moab and Arches National Park two weekends ago and it was beautiful and amazing. Utah is so IMG_2624awesome!
I tend to talk big and get myself in over my head. So the two guys I went with took me biking on Slick Rock. It is intense and it just about did me in. But it was fun. And I am crazy enough I would do it again.

What Dreams May Come

road It’s amazing how most dreams seem completely insane and random. Teeth falling out. Running from the Nazi’s and hiding in toy stores… Yes and they get stranger. But every once in awhile (great while) I’ll have a dream that will really make me think. Like last night…in my dream...I was meeting with some kind of support therapy group that seemed to be “We hate our jobs anonymous.” I don’t think I knew anyone else in the group except for the person facilitating the group discussion was one of my advisors up at BYUI. When it was my turn I burst into tears and started going on about how when I was BYUI I knew what I wanted to do and the direction I wanted my life to go. I was doing it. And I was so happy. I wanted to continue down that road. And seek for opportunities doing similar things. And now though the decisions I made and the events out of my control I had somehow gotten way off that road and not doing a thing with what I loved so much in college. And I was hysterical.

I woke up with those little short breaths; you know the ones you get after crying really hard. I don’t know if I was really crying or not. I also woke up thinking. Thinking about the decisions that I have made since I was in school. Most of the decisions I had to choose between two good things. I started wondering  what would’ve happened if I had chosen differently. Where would I be? Would I be working in what I had a passion for when I was in college instead of in something so far from it? Would that road have been right for me? And yes the Frost poem has come to mind as I have wondered if I took to ‘road less traveled’ or did I take the safe one. Looking back though I recognize certainly didn’t make all decisions consistent with what some of my passions are. Maybe those passions just didn’t seem realistic or maybe there was too much risk involved. There were also other things that influenced my decisions such as family.

It was interesting that this advisor would be the one in my dream leading this discussion. He really didn’t say anything to me in my dream, however up at BYUI he was one who help me to realize that those things that I really enjoyed I could make a career out of.

As I have thought about this I have been torn between the two adages:  “go with your dreams” and “…most jobs are dull…” So which is it? I haven’t come up with any real answers. And I am not saying that this was a vision to get me back on the right path. If anything it made me more frustrated with my current job.  It reminded me that I really knew what I wanted when I was finishing up my degree. I knew the direction I wanted to go. I discovered something that I could be passionate about my last year of school. I found a direction to make a career out of those passions. And now two years have gone by since I graduated and I am not doing what I set out to do.  The only thing that is somewhat close to what I wanted to do with my life is my church calling. Activities co-chair. Yes, I love to plan activities and programs and events. I love recreation. I love experiential education. And what do I do everyday. I sit in an office. I work as an assistant. DEPRESSING. Good news is I can always change the direction of the road. Advantage to being single. Maybe that is why I am trying so hard to get back into school.

That was totally Wicked

wicked_img Yes, my family was one of the few in the valley to to get tickets to Wicked playing here at the Capitol Theater. And we didn't have to wait in line for 6 hours to get them. We actually got them back in June through a friend of my mom who has season tickets  and was able to purchase them before the general public. This was the second time I saw it. I saw it a year ago in London. And it was just as good here as it was there. I was pretty impressed with this cast. It was fun to see it with my family and especially my sister Bekah. She has wanted to see it for 7 years and finally got to yesterday.
We also went to The Pie up by the U. I heard that it was good and it was. Be careful if you order a large. It's huge

Hurray for Blossoms

Blossoms2It is so much fun to walk around Temple Square in the spring because the flowers are planted and thriving and there are blossoms everywhere. It's fun to just be outside.

I've started a new tradition of running on my lunch break. I go up through memory park to City Creek Canyon. It is super great. Ok, after the first day I was dying a little bit. I discovered there are a few more hills is SLC than there are in WJ. But my body is quickly adjusting and loving it. I don't get as antsy toward the end of the day. And it is so nice to get my workout out of the way so I can get others things done in the evening.

And I have a wo0hoo news! Last week I got a letter telling me that the last $300 of my student loan has been forgiven. Wow. So I am officially done. Just in time to start paying my for graduate school. I haven't succeeded in getting into a program yet but I am not giving up.

Oh BTW Happy Administrative Assistants Day! I had no idea that it was today until my boss surprised me with flowers today. It was totally sweet.

Holi--Festival of Colors

Saturday was a fun day. I went to the The Sri Sri Krishna Temple located clear in American Fork. This big beautiful Hindu Temple out in the middle of Farmer Joe's field.

And what better way to celebrate the Hindu new year then by throwing colored chalk at each other.

Festival of Colars 3-28g

Festival of Colars 3-28c

This was the first year that I went to the Festival of Colors. And it was super fun. I was caked in chalk. The music was fun. I dodged the guy who tried to kiss me. I danced and chanted. And I met some great people.

On the way home my fuel light in my car came on. And I just kept going on faith because I was not about to stop to fill up my car.

My day at work

Checked email, typed a few memos, ran a few things around to be signed, answered phones, resolved issues, saved Davis' butt, ordered a few RMs around, made copies, booked a trip to Peru. It was a full day.
